Established in 1987, the Campo Sheriff's Substation serves an unincorporated area of nearly 300 square miles with a population of approximately 3,000 people. The area includes the San Diego backcountry communities of Campo, Potrero, Tecate and Dulzura.

Campo is known as the home of the former Camp Lockett, the last camp the U.S. Army built specifically for horse cavalry units. After Camp Lockett closed, the camp was renamed Camp Mitchell and used as an Army recuperation hospital and World War II prisoner-of-war camp for Italian prisoners. Other popular historical sites include the Gaskill Stone Store and the San Diego Railroad Museum.

Campo is near the official southern terminus of the Pacific Crest Trail, a recreational hiking and equestrian trail extending 2,650 miles (4,260 km) north to the Canadian border. Visitors enjoy the rural landscape while visiting such local historical sites.

This area is patrolled by the Sheriff’s Office. Services include law enforcement, off-road enforcement, crime prevention, community advisory group (CAG), Senior Volunteer Patrol and more.

The San Diego County Sheriff’s Office initiated the Citizen Advisory Group (CAG) based upon the recognition that members of the community are an integral part of any law enforcement strategy. The Office knows the community has insights and perspectives that can assist Sheriff’s deputies’ control and prevent crimes in the communities they serve. Thus, the CAG provides a forum to encourage open communication between law enforcement and the community. The Campo CAG hopes to foster a greater sense of ownership on behalf of the citizens in addition to a greater sense of collaboration with law enforcement officials in the east county.
