Jim Emig is a 26-year veteran of the San Diego Sheriff's Office. He started his law enforcement career in January 1996 as a cadet and was assigned to the Vista Detention Facility upon completion of the law enforcement academy.
In May of 2000, Jim was assigned to the North Coastal Patrol Station, where he worked uniformed patrol in Encinitas, Solana Beach, Del Mar, and Rancho Santa Fe. As a deputy, he was assigned to the In-Service Training Unit, the Fallbrook Patrol Station, Santee Area Investigations, and North Coastal Area Investigations.
In January of 2015, Jim was promoted to sergeant and was assigned to the Vista Courthouse, where he supervised bailiffs and security personnel assigned to the courthouse. In February of 2016, Jim was selected as a patrol sergeant at the Valley Center Substation, where he supervised patrol deputies covering four large casinos and several Indian reservations. He was then selected as the Valley Center Administrative & Detective Sergeant, where he supervised detectives, crime suppression deputies and the administrative staff. In March of 2018, Jim was transferred to the Sheriff's Child Abuse and Sexual Assault Unit, where he supervised felony sexual assault investigations and both physical & sexual child abuse investigations.
In January of 2021, Jim was promoted to lieutenant and was assigned to the Sheriff's Communications Center. He was transferred to the San Marcos Patrol Station, where he supervised the Detective Unit, the Community Oriented Policing Team, the Gang Enforcement Team and patrol operations. Jim was then transferred to the Valley Center Station as the Station Commander.
Jim was promoted to the rank of Captain in February of 2023 and was assigned to the Major Crimes Division, which includes the Homicide Unit, the Child Abuse Unit, the Sexual Assault Unit, the Elder Abuse Unit, the SAFE Task Force, and the Financial Crimes Unit.
Jim was promoted to the rank of Commander in February of 2024. He now oversees the Court Services Bureau, the Regional Law Enforcement Academy, the Training Unit and Sheriff's Records Division.
Jim holds a bachelor's degree in criminal justice from California Polytechnic University at San Luis Obispo and is a graduate of the POST Supervisory Leadership Institute and the San Diego Regional Leadership Institute.
